This sprawling 6,500-square-foot independent bookstore is beloved for its friendly resident cats, whose roaming presence has earned it the unofficial nickname “The Cat Bookstore.”
From the moment I pulled into the parking lot and saw the colorful exterior mural, I knew this place was going to be special.

As a cat-dad and hoarder of books myself, this store was right up my alley.
The shop houses more than 125,000 organized preowned paperback and hardback titles spanning mystery, romance, science fiction, children’s books, history, art, religion, and much more, along with over 5,000 new titles, including works by local authors.
Long, narrow aisles stretch between tall wooden shelves packed tightly with neatly organized titles, creating the kind of atmosphere where you can happily lose track of time.
Clearly labeled sections make it easy to browse everything from Politics and Business to Pets and Travel.
Of course, the true stars of the show are the cats.
Friendly resident store cats roam the aisles, lounge on counters, perch atop towering bookshelves, and even stroll along overhead catwalks, keeping a watchful eye on their literary kingdom.
I spotted Odin, a fluffy white cat with bright golden eyes surveying the room from a perch, while Nash, a black-and-white cat stretched out contentedly on the floor between shelves.
In another corner Princess Buttercup, a Siamese cat, slept peacefully atop a stack of books and a cozy scarf, completely unfazed by the bustle around her.
The store is also home to foster cats available for adoption (through Loving Care Cat Rescue), giving visitors the chance to take home more than just a great read.
To keep these furry employees safe, the shop features a double door vestibule entrance designed to prevent any curious cats from slipping outside.
Beyond the books and cats, Cupboard Maker Books fosters a strong sense of community.
