What You’ll See at Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch
My visit began at the roadside entrance along State Game Lands 230, marked by a wooden sign along Route 74.

From there, a short gravel trail winds gently uphill through a leafy forest, climbing about 75 feet over roughly 250 yards.

Along the way, interpretive signs highlight some of the migratory birds that can be seen from the hawk watch, adding an educational element to the walk.

The site itself is named after the Waggoner family, who historically owned property in this area.

The path is easy to follow, and the anticipation builds as glimpses of sky and rock begin to appear through the trees.

At the top, the forest suddenly gives way to a sprawling field of tumbled boulders, forming the overlook itself.

These lichen-covered rocks create a natural platform, but sturdy footwear is a must as the terrain can be uneven.

Once you step out onto the rocks, the view opens dramatically to reveal a patchwork of farmland, winding roads, and distant ridges stretching for miles.

On a clear day, you can look south toward Carlisle or north toward New Bloomfield and Little Buffalo State Park.

From mid-August through December, the overlook becomes a hub of activity as volunteers and birders gather to count migrating raptors.

Thousands of birds pass through each season, including Sharp-shinned, Broad-winged, Cooper’s, and Red-tailed hawks, along with Bald and Golden eagles.
