Recognizing the strategic importance of this location along the Monongahela River, a vital artery for trade and migration in that time period, Bowman built a simple 2-room log structure and trading post here in 1789.

Bowman wasn’t the first to recognize the importance of this location – his trading post stood upon land where the British had built Fort Burd during the French and Indian War.

When Leila Bowman, the last of the Bowmans to reside in the mansion, passed away in 1959, she left the home to the county in her will, for the express purpose of having it become a museum.
