The Pinnacle Overlook, often referred to simply as “The Pinnacle”, is located just north of the Holtwood Dam on the eastern shore of the Susquehanna River.


The Pinnacle sits on a rocky bluff 380 feet above the water, offering excellent views of Lake Aldred on the Susquehanna River.

This 2,400-acre lake, popular with boaters, was created by the construction of the Safe Harbor dam to the north and the Holtwood dam to the south.

Lake Aldred is named in honor of John E. Aldred, who helped secure funding for both the Holtwood and Safe Harbor dams.

Duncan Island, readily visible from the Pinnacle, was studied in the 1950s and 1970s and was found to contain evidence of human inhabitation dating to the Archaic period (8000 B.C. to 1000 A.D.).

Directions to the Pinnacle Overlook

The Pinnacle Overlook Day Use Area is located at the end of Pinnacle Road in Holtwood.

If navigating by GPS, use coordinates 39.84562, -76.34438 to find the parking area.

From the parking area, walk around the gate and down the trail approximately 500 feet to the overlook.

Chickies Rock is one of the most popular scenic overlooks along the eastern side of the Susquehanna River, a towering rock outcropping more than 100 feet above the river.
