I spent the better part of the day on October 12, 2022 looking for the best fall foliage views in Centre County.
I started out with a 1.4 mile out-and-back hike to a pair of vistas along the Allegheny Front Trail.
The fall foliage in the Moshannon State Forest was exceptional as I made my way through a rocky chasm en route to the first vista along my hike.
Soon I was standing in front of Ralph’s Majestic Vista, named in honor of Ralph Seeley, founder of the Allegheny Front Trail and the Quehanna Trail.
Continuing northeast along the Allegheny Front Trail, I arrived at Ralph’s Pretty Good View in another 2/10ths of a mile.
The views from here are outstanding (better than Ralph’s Majestic Vista, in my opinion), looking south in the direction of State College.
From here I backtracked to where I was parked along Underwood Road, then made my way to Black Moshannon State Park just a few miles to the north.
Black Moshannon State Park is consistently one of my favorite fall foliage destinations in Centre County, and this year is no exception.
Having just kayaked the lake with my daughter the evening before, my explorations on this day were all on foot.
I first did the easy 0.7 mile hike around the Lake Loop Trail at the northern end of Black Moshannon Lake.
The fall foliage on this side of the park is dominated by yellow-gold leaves.
That’s not to say you won’t find the occasional red maple along the trail.
Everywhere I went at the park, I was treated to exceptional Centre County fall foliage scenes.
If you love fall foliage and have a chance to visit Centre County in the next few days – do it – you’ll be glad you did!
