The McIntyre Wild Area Waterfall Triple Crown – a series of 3 phenomenal hikes to 10 spectacular waterfalls.
All located within 4 miles of each other in a section of the Loyalsock State Forest renowned for its natural beauty as well as its mining and logging history.
As with the horse racing triple crown, the McIntyre Wild Area waterfall triple crown involves different courses of different lengths, each with its own unique challenges and features.
So let’s take an in-depth look at each of the three hikes.
First Leg – Dutchmans Run
Dutchmans Run has the distinction of being home to the tallest waterfall in the McIntyre Wild Area.
This is also the longest leg of the three, at roughly 3 miles round-trip to see the 3 main waterfalls (and numerous cascades and water slides) along it.
I did a thorough write-up on Dutchmans Run, complete with maps, GPS coordinates, photos, and videos which you can view HERE.
Second Leg – Miners Run
Miners Run has the distinction of being home to the largest concentration of waterfalls in the McIntyre Wild Area.
6 waterfalls within a .6 mile stretch, giving you a tremendous bang-for-your-buck 1.2 mile loop hike.
I did a thorough write-up on hiking to the waterfalls along Miners Run, complete with maps, GPS coordinates, photos, and videos, all of which you can view HERE.
The sheer variety in sizes and shapes of waterfalls along this hike make it my personal favorite of the three.
And if I could only hike one of the three legs of the McIntyre Wild Area waterfall triple crown, Miners Run would be the one.
But of course you want to see / hike all 3, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this write-up, so let’s move on to the final leg of the triple crown.
Third Leg – Hounds Run
Hounds Run has the distinction of being home to the fewest waterfalls of the three hikes – 1 main waterfall and 1 small splash dam.
It is also the shortest hike of the three, a 0.7 mile out-and-back trip.
Despite taking you to only 1 main waterfall, the stature and complexity of that single waterfall makes the Hounds Run hike a highly satisfying short excursion.
I did a thorough write-up on Hounds Run, complete with maps, GPS coordinates, photos, and video, all of which you can view HERE.
The McIntyre Wild Area is a 7,279 acre hiking mecca.
And while there are plenty of other streams in the Wild Area that are home to smaller waterfalls (Doe Run and Hawk Run come to mind), the three I’ve included here on the Triple Crown list are the three best bang-for-your-buck waterfall hikes.
Dutchmans Run. Miners Run. Hounds Run.
Put all 3 on your PA Bucket List!
And if you need further visual proof, check out this video I out together of clips from all 3 hikes.
