Long before governments were mandating it, Pennsylvania’s backroads were a terrific place to “social distance”!
Here are 10 outstanding Pennsylvania backroads adventures that not only lead to interesting destinations, but also take you down scenic roads that are themselves sights to be savored.
1. Bear Gap Road
Bear Gap Road is a state forest road in Centre County that leads to a trail head near Indian Wells overlook along the Mid State Trail in the Rothrock State Forest.
2. Faupel Road
Faupel Road in Bedford County is a fantastic fall foliage destination in an area known exceptional rural scenery.
It’s also within a half-hour drive of the equally scenic (and historic) 1806 Old Log Church along the Lincoln Highway.
3. Blankley Road
Blankley Road is a state forest road that leads to two of the most scenic overlooks in all of the Buchanan State Forest, Warrior Ridge Vista and Rainsburg Vista.
4. Commissary Road
Commissary Road is one of the best fall foliage drives in the Laurel Highlands, passing many old and interesting structures as it winds through the mountains of Somerset County.
5. Faidley Road
Faidley Road in Somerset County is best-known for the patriotic barns that it passes by.
6. Covered Bridge Road
Covered Bridge Road in Somerset County leads, not surprisingly, to the Glessner Covered Bridge near Shanksville.
7. Poe Paddy Drive
Poe Paddy Drive is a state forest road in Centre County that leads to several of the best scenic overlooks in the Bald Eagle State Forest.
8. Ream Road
Ream Road connects Kings Covered Bridge in Somerset County to the Barronvale Covered Bridge a mile away.
9. Fisher Road
Fisher Road is a state forest road in Bedford County that leads to Fisher Road Vista.
10. Summit Road
Summit Road is an aptly-named state forest road in Fulton County that leads to Summit Road Vista.
